Support a Harris County Medicare for All Resolution!

Harris County Commissioners Court

Harris County, the third largest county in the United States (US), can play an important role in highlighting the desperate need for an expanded and improved Medicare for All.

According to the most recent US Census data, over ONE MILLION Harris County residents, or 22.4% of the total population, are uninsured. Furthermore, Harris County has the highest number of uninsured children anywhere in the country -- 195,000 of Harris County children, or 15% of the total children population, are uninsured. This is unacceptable.

We call on the Harris County Commissioners Court to pass a resolution in support of the federal Medicare for All legislation, and on U.S. Representatives Sylvia R. Garcia and Lizzie Fletcher to sign on as co-sponsors of the bill.

In 2019 (pre-pandemic), 228,140 Texans in Rep. Garcia’s congressional district (TX-29), and 118,590 Texans in Rep. Fletcher’s congressional district (TX-07), were uninsured. It is past time that our elected officials finally and publicly acknowledge that healthcare is a human right and support Medicare for All.

By passing a resolution, the local Harris County government can help to shape the national public narrative and build political will needed to ultimately win guaranteed healthcare for everyone as a matter of right.

Through the passage of Medicare for All, the US will get closer to universal healthcare coverage for every single person living in this country. Medicare for All means everybody in, nobody out, and no premiums, no co-pays, and no deductibles to worry about.

During a pandemic, we should NOT choose between healthcare, rent, medication, and food. The pandemic has shown the fallacy in our health care "system" when we tied healthcare to jobs. We need to end this madness and demand healthcare from cradle to grave.

We recognize that our current, profit-driven healthcare industry in the US is shortchanging Black and Latinx communities across the board and must be drastically transformed. The time is now. Join us in the fight to a healthcare system that works for us all, not just the few. Enough is enough. We need Medicare for All.
