Support AB 609: CEQA Exemption for Infill Housing

California State Assembly

AB 609 will end the abuse of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) to block environmentally-friendly housing by creating clear, objective criteria for exempting housing projects in existing urban areas from environmental review.

Research shows that dense, infill development near urban cores reduces transport pollution, is more resource- and energy-efficient, and is otherwise more sustainable than homes built on the periphery on greenfield, or on otherwise undeveloped sites.

And yet, anti-housing activists routinely use CEQA lawsuits to slow or block these types of sustainable homes.

AB 609 will end the abuse of CEQA to block environmentally-friendly housing by creating clear, objective criteria for exempting housing projects in existing urban areas from environmental review.

AB 609 offers these “clean” exemptions with no additional requirements regarding project labor agreements or cross-subsidies for affordable housing, making it a powerful incentive for home builders to propose sustainable, infill housing in urban areas across the state.

PS: We also need your help to ensure the bill passes out of committee. Please check the box on the right to commit to call your Assemblymember when the bill is up for a vote -- and we'll follow up with you when the hearing nears!

I support AB 609 (Wicks), which will streamline the smart, sustainable homes that we need more of by ending the abuse of CEQA and creating clear, objective criteria for exempting housing projects in existing urban areas from environmental review.
