Support Affordable Housing at 831 Water Street
831 Water Street is back before the Planning Commission for approval on December 19th. This is an SB 35 project, which means if it meets Santa Cruz’s objective standards, it must be approved.
This time, the project is 100% affordable and includes studios, 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments designed for families. These updates, along with a few other changes, are why it’s back up for review by the Planning Commission.
Last time, the City Council illegally denied this project. They were forced to circle back and approve it in compliance with the law. Let’s make sure this time it moves forward without delay.
831 Water Street is exactly what Santa Cruz needs:
- 160 much-needed affordable homes
- Centrally located on a major transit corridor.
- Helps families and workers live in Santa Cruz near jobs, schools, and services instead of commuting.
This is the affordable housing we’ve been asking for. Let’s make it happen.

I support the 831 Water Street development, which will create 160 housing units, all 100% affordable.
As an SB 35 project, if it meets Santa Cruz’s objective standards, it must be approved. Following the law and approving this project is critical to ensuring Santa Cruz fulfills its housing commitments.
This is the kind of affordable housing Santa Cruz needs. It’s workforce housing for the many people who work in Santa Cruz but struggle to find an affordable home near their jobs, schools, and essential services.
831 Water Street will provide 160 much-needed affordable homes for local workers and families. This project will help tackle our housing shortage by welcoming new neighbors into a vibrant, opportunity-rich neighborhood with access to jobs, schools, shopping, and public transportation.
These new homes also reduce transportation burdens and benefits the environment. It is centrally located on a major thoroughfare with bus access. This bikeable, walkable location allows residents to live car-free while enjoying easy access to neighborhood amenities, downtown, and the bus corridor connecting Santa Cruz to Watsonville.
This is the affordable housing we’ve been asking for. Let’s make it happen.
