Support affordable housing at Community of Faith UMC
Supervisor Kathy Smith and Planning Commissioner Evelyn Spain
Community of Faith UMC in Franklin Farm wants to build between 75 and 100 affordable homes on under-utilized church property. Tell the county that we want this housing by signing our petition!
CoFUMC has operated a food pantry for more than 25 years, and is well aware of the need for afforadble housing. However, a few vocal and influential opponents have done everything they can to stop affordable housing at the church. People have threatened lawsuits saying that an apartment building would violate the Franklin Farm architectural standards. Others are trying to portray the church as looking to profit from this development, or that the church is somehow insolvent. Meanwhile, the Franklin Farm Property Owners Association has done everything in their power to stop the church from further exploring the feasibility of offering affordable housing on their property (e.g., refusing to meet with the church, ignoring emails, not allowing access to the community portal) while some residents have actively campaigned with door-to-door flyers, yard signs and t-shirts against the creation of these homes.
There is a long road to building these affordable homes, and it starts
with the upcoming Planning Commission SSPA workshop on Thursday, May 22
at 7pm at the Fairfax County Government Center. We will submit your
petition responses to the Planning Commission so they have your testimony!
