This petition is for non-St. Louis City residents. If you live in the city, check out our email campaign HERE.

For almost a year, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken our loved ones from us. It has cost us our jobs, our housing, our healthcare, and caused untold suffering due to isolation from our families, friends, and communities.

This suffering has not been spread out evenly. Working class and poor people have borne the brunt of this pain, with Black and brown and LGBTQ working class communities seeing the most devastation. The capitalist class of business owners and investors who run most companies have seen their fortunes grow to unimaginable levels while suffering little of the pandemic’s effects.

If viruses don’t see class or race, what is going on? This crisis is due to our economy and government’s inability to take care of our most basic needs; this is a crisis of capitalism and white supremacy.

For 50+ years, city, state, and federal budgets have been slashed to pay for tax cuts to the wealthy. These austerity measures have systematically plundered services we need, such as public health, transit, housing, city infrastructure like roads, sidewalks and utilities, the Postal Service, and more, for the benefit of the wealthy business owners.. To make matters worse, these public services have been auctioned off to private companies to run for a profit, also known as privatization. In place of spending for the public good, spending is shifted towards an increasingly militarized police force and jails.

The effects of austerity and privatization are rampant in the St. Louis region. The recent announcement of more St. Louis City public school closing is the most recent example of how cutting taxes for rich people leads to dire consequences for working class people and paves the way for privatization.

Austerity and Privatization are literally killing us. It’s past time our government prioritized the people over the wealthy. We need a People First Budget.

St. Louis DSA is building power to win these simple demands from all elected officials in the greater St. Louis Region:

  1. Passing a budget with NO cuts to public services EXCEPT Police and Jails

  2. Veto ANY legislation that privatizes a publicly owned utility or asset - selling OR leasing

  3. Support legislation that protects publicly owned utilities and assets
