Support Stoughton Teachers Who Oppose Bigotry

Superintendent of Stoughton Public Schools Dr. Marguerite Rizzi and members of the Stoughton School Committee

Following instances at Stoughton High School in Massachusetts of students making and circulating swastikas, educators asked for broad measures to be taken in the schools and the community to address hate speech. Yet the school administration tried to dismiss the episodes — and disciplined three teachers for responding to the bigotry. The story caught the attention of The Boston Globe and other media outlets. Please show your support for the Stoughton teachers and all educators who have the courage to fight bigotry.

I strongly support educators in Stoughton, Massachusetts, three of whom were disciplined after they used their professional judgment to address instances of hate speech at their school. The school district administration should immediately rescind the disciplinary actions and support all of the district’s educators in their efforts to promote understanding, empathy and a positive school culture. The safety and well-being of our students are vital to our community.

No instance of hate speech or bigotry should be ignored, and the community deserves the opportunity to address such crucial issues when they occur.
