The development of the FRA's proposed preferred long distance passenger rail corridor connecting Detroit- Toledo- Columbus- Dayton-Cincinnati- Louisville- Bowling Green- Nashville- Birmingham- Montgomery- Mobile- New Orleans will increase the independence of Americans with disabilities, as the current public transit systems connecting the states along the proposed long-distance corridor are virtually non-existent.
It has long been recognized that public transit is key to the civil rights and independence of people with disabilities. For many, it is impossible to reliably get to employment, education, medical care, and socialization without a strong, multi-modal public transit system. Passenger rail is important for the independence of people with disabilities because it supplements local transit systems, forms more connections between cities, and can allow for a more accessible alternative to air travel.
Cross-state passenger rail development is vital for enhancing disability independence. With federal funds for expansion, we can target underserved needs from Detroit through Toledo, Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Louisville, Bowling Green, Nashville, Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, and New Orleans. By supporting projects like the Detroit to New Orleans corridor, ensuring affordability, accessibility, and coverage, these states can better support all community members.
