Teacher Diversity Matters

The White House and The Department of Education

Between 2002 and 2012, the number of African-American teachers dropped significantly in nine of America’s largest cities.

Teacher diversity matters. Research has shown that students of color do better when they have teachers from a similar racial background. Teachers of color can be especially important role models for students of color who live in poor communities and are less likely to know college graduates. We already have large representation gaps between African-American students and teachers, and it’s getting much worse.

This won’t be an easy fix, but fixing the issue begins with taking it seriously.

We’re asking the White House and the Department of Education to convene a summit on teacher diversity. Add your name.
