Tell Dartmouth College: No Polluting Energy from Biomass

Dartmouth College President Philip Hanlon

Dartmouth College is planning to switch to burning biomass and biodiesel to heat the campus. Biomass is bad for our health and bad for the climate and we’re calling on Dartmouth to stop this plan.

Biomass (especially from wood) has devastating effects. Incineration releases more carbon at a time when we need to be doing everything we can to prevent the worst effects of climate change. And people who live near these polluters are at a higher risk for asthma, heart disease and cancer just from breathing the air.

It’s time to transition to clean, local, renewable energy instead of fossil fuels and polluting energy like biomass. Sign the petition to demand that Dartmouth College stops their biomass plan!

We are calling on Dartmouth College President Philip Hanlon to stop the plan to use biomass and biodiesel to heat the campus and transition to truly clean energy instead.

Biomass and biodiesel are polluting energy sources that will increase Dartmouth’s greenhouse gas emissions at a time when we must be doing everything possible to mitigate the climate crisis. Experts have shown that the transition to biomass and biodiesel, as planned by Dartmouth, would represent an increase in carbon emissions, in direct opposition to the plan’s stated outcomes.

Additionally, burning biomass and biodiesel pollutes the air we breathe by releasing toxics like mercury, lead and particulate matter into our air. This puts people who live hear the facilities at a higher risk for asthma, heart disease and cancer.

It’s time to transition to clean, local, renewable energy that protects our climate and our health. Dartmouth’s plan to burn biomass and biodiesel is a major step backwards. We’re calling on Dartmouth College to transition instead to truly clean energy, the better option for our state and our planet.
