Eastern Carolina University (ECU) is monitoring the social media activity of students using a shady private contractor called Social Sentinel. Public records revealed that even activity of individuals who have no affiliation with the school has gotten scooped up in the surveillance dragnet, creating profiles of activists who are critical of the administration. This results in an environment of intimidation and a chilling of First Amendment expression.
