The President’s announcement that the U.S. is withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement proves that it is up to cities to dictate the future of our environment. Policy decisions made on a local level are crucial to the health and welfare of current and future residents. Columbus needs to make immediate policy changes to increase our use of clean, renewable energy that will pave the way for future growth, healthy communities, and development of our city. That’s why we are committed to putting Columbus on the map of cities that are leading the resistance against the anti-environmental policies coming from the White House.

Elected officials in Salt Lake City, San Diego, Madison and an increasing number of cities nationwide have committed to a transition to 100% clean and renewable energy. Studies predict that a transition to clean energy will add 1 million jobs in the U.S. by 2030 and increase household disposable income by $350-$400 in 2030. There are sweeping amounts of support for alternative energy on both sides of party lines – two thirds of all Americans give priority to developing alternative energy over fossil fuels.

The people and businesses of Columbus are already proactive about limiting our carbon footprint. We have come far as a city already, but we need to take the steps necessary to ensure all Columbus residents have access to clean water, clean air and good jobs. We are ready for Columbus to transition to 100% clean and renewable energy.

The White House will not lead us. It is up to cities like Columbus to forge a new path for a just, sustainable, and healthy future. We must do our part to protect our environment, our economy, and our citizens quality of life.
