Tell Premier Clark: Drop the NEB's sham review of the Trans Mountain pipeline!

Premier Christy Clark

Recently the City of Vancouver made public oil spill projections that show if just one of the 400 oil tankers a year that would come through Vancouver harbour had an accident that the resulting oil spill would devastate both the environment and the local economy. It is now clearer than ever that for BC, this pipeline is all risk and no reward.

Unfortunately, the process that will decide whether this pipeline gets built is being run by the National Energy Board who have already proven that they will put the interests of big oil ahead of those of British Columbians.

Premier Christy Clark has the power to end this charade and drop the NEB process by canceling the equivalency agreement with the federal government. Allowing BC to begin its own Environmental Assessment of the pipeline – but it’s going to take all of us raising our voices together to make sure she takes this big step.

Tell Premier Clark: Drop the NEB's sham pipeline process and hold an open and robust Province-led review of Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain pipeline!

I am writing you today because I’m deeply concerned with the way the National Energy Board is conducting its review of Kinder Morgan’s new Trans Mountain pipeline.

Their process has restricted access for thousands of people who applied to take part. These concerned citizens were either locked out of the process altogether or had their participation limited to writing a letter. The NEB has also limited what topics can be addressed and refuse to hear evidence on important issues including climate change.

Even for those who have been granted intervenor status, the process has been less than satisfactory. During the first round of Information requests, Kinder Morgan refused to answer hundreds of questions from interveners, including from your own government, and the NEB has rejected requests to require Kinder Morgan to answer those questions.

When combined with the lack of oral cross examination in the Kinder Morgan process, this raises the serious possibility that many of these important questions will go completely unanswered.

For myself and many other concerned citizens this is not an acceptable outcome, which is why I’m writing you today to ask you to end the equivalency agreement with the NEB and commit the Province to hold its own assessment of this project.

I hope that you will agree that Canadians deserve answers about this project. Which is why I am appealing to you to stop lending legitimacy to the NEB process and give all concerned citizens the opportunity to take part in a more open Provincial process where their voices will be heard and the company will have to adequately respond to all fair questions.

Thank you for giving your attention to this urgent matter.
