Tell Michigan Democratic Elected and Party Leaders: Support Cancellation of All Federally Held Student Loan Debt

Michigan Democratic Members of Congress, Elected and Party Leaders

Student loan debt is a crisis for our nation and state.

Cancellation of federal student loan debt will lift a financial burden weighing heavily on millions of Americans, significantly narrow the unjust gender and racial wealth gaps, and stimulate our economy through additional consumer spending. It is both a moral imperative and an economically smart strategy.

Many careers require post-secondary school education or training, but students must often accumulate immense amounts of debt to achieve the very milestone they are told is essential to their success. Women and students of color carry a disproportionate burden of student debt which greatly contributes to gender, racial and generational wealth gaps.

The Michigan Democratic Party passed our Resolution Supporting Student Loan Debt Cancellation! This is a victory for our movement. And now it is time for our Democratic legislators to step up and speak out in support of cancelling all federal student loan debt.

Join us in calling on our Michigan elected and Party leaders to support action to cancel all federally held student loan debt.

Michigan Democratic Elected and Party Leaders,

We ask you to support action to cancel all federally held student loan debt.

The student debt crisis imposes an enormous burden on millions of Americans and on our economy. Women and people of color face disproportionate amounts of this debt, which only contributes to the unjust gender, racial, and generational wealth gaps.

- Michigan students graduating from college have, on average, $31,000 in debt.
- Student debt cancellation would substantially increase Black and Latinx household wealth and help close racial wealth gaps.
- Women hold about two-thirds of the nation’s student loan debt, and must borrow an average of $3,000 more than men to attend equivalent higher education programs.

Cancellation of this debt would provide immediate relief to millions of Michiganders and Americans, increase equity, significantly narrow the wealth gaps--and stimulate the economy. Please publicly declare support for and pursue action to cancel student loan debt.
