If Texas legislators get their way, I won’t be able to complete my education.

My name is Maria, and I am an undocumented student attending the University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘em, Horns!). My goal is to graduate by May of 2016 with my bachelor’s degree in Rhetoric and Writing so I can pursue my dream of becoming a speechwriter. Unfortunately for me and thousands of students across Texas, our dreams might be put to rest in a couple of months.

On Monday, April 6 the State Senate subcommittee on border security will have a hearing on SB 1819, a bill that if passed, will eliminate in-state tuition for undocumented students and thousands of immigrant youth like myself will be shut out of the college experience we’ve worked so hard in high school to be a part of.

That’s why I’m going to the Texas State Capitol on Monday to demand the subcommittee support ALL students and keep in-state tuition.  And I want to take your voice with me, unless you can join me in person!

If enough of sign this petition and share our stories, both undocumented and allies, Texas legislators will see that we’re serious about protecting everyone’s right to education and saving in-state tuition. The more of us speak up, the more pressure they will feel to stop playing political games with our education.

Education is a human right, and it is something everyone - regardless of immigration status - should have access to. We have the power to make sure thousands of undocumented students stay in school and achieve their dreams.
