Tell YouTube: Suspending Trump isn’t enough

CEO Susan Wojcicki & the YouTube team

During the election, YouTube implemented civic integrity policies to prevent users from uploading content that misled people about voting or encouraged others to interfere with democratic processes. But Youtube declined to enforce these rules against Trump while he was spreading misinformation about voter fraud.

YouTube did finally suspended Trump’s account following the insurrection at our Capitol for “inciting others to commit violent acts against individuals or a defined group of people.” But frankly -- this was too little, too late.

Trump and other disinformation agents had already violated YouTube's policies constantly, all while YouTube looked the other way. Videos promoting the “Stop the Steal” narrative racked up over 55 million total engagements and over 20 million views on the platform.

And despite Trump's suspension, the videos that he posted throughout his presidency -- which perpetuate groundless and incendiary lies about our elections, amplify conspiracy theories, antagonize marginalized and vulnerable groups, and encourage violence -- are still up for people to watch and share.

As of now, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has said the platform will lift the suspension of Donald Trump’s channel once “the risk of violence decreases.” But here's the issue: the “risk of violence” surrounding Trump’s channel isn’t going anywhere.

We saw it time and time again during his presidency -- from the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville to the January 6th insurrection: Trump will not hesitate to abuse his wide reach to spread hate speech and lies.

YouTube cannot give Trump another opportunity to mislead voters and stoke chaos on its platform. This is not about censorship -- Trump already has a megaphone that’s vastly larger than most Americans will ever have.

Rather, it’s about YouTube enforcing its own policies and holding those who incite violence on its platform accountable. If you agree that Susan Wojcicki and YouTube must permanently ban Trump’s channel, add your name today.

Donald Trump used his YouTube channel to perpetuate groundless and incendiary lies about the 2020 election, spread harmful conspiracy theories, antagonize marginalized and vulnerable groups, and encourage violence. He flagrantly violated YouTube’s community guidelines -- and took advantage of the platform’s weak enforcement of its own policies.

YouTube says it will lift its suspension of Trump’s channel once “the risk of violence decreases” -- but Trump has proven to be an ever-present danger to the safety and security of our democracy. We demand that the former president is permanently banned from the platform and that YouTube recommits to enforcing and strengthening its own rules.
