The people of Tacoma and Pierce County need a recovery measures from COVID-19.

And not just an Equitable recovery, we need a people centered recovery, which is why at Sunrise Tacoma we are fighting for what we call a People’s Recovery because the system that kills the climate is the same system that kills black and brown folks. The system that left us woefully unprepared for a pandemic is the same one that has been trying to rollback already inadequate environmental protections. The system that prioritizes dumping pollution in poor communities is the same one that closes down hundreds of voting booths in the black ones.

We are launching the People's Recovery because it is time that our government adopt the people's platform.

We are asking the City of Tacoma to establish a People's Recovery Task Force housed within the halls of the City that can gather community groups and various members of City committees/commissions/boards to figure out a bold transformative vision for Tacoma that will allow us to recover from Covid-19 stronger and more people centered than ever. This task force will embody the people's platform. We hope to work with community members like you to further develop the people's platform.

Our vision for the People's Platform is:

1. People first policies

-Social programs like housing assistance, food aid, and childcare do not get cut.

-Halting evictions, foreclosures, and shut offs of water and electricity.

2. Health and opportunity is a top priority for every community, not just the advantaged view.

3. All relief measures are centered in equity & justice to ensure that we do not replicate systemic injustices that got us into these crises.

4. Communities need direct investments to equitably recover from COVID-19, an economic recession, social stratification, racial injustice, and the climate crisis.

5. Community Consultation and collaboration is integral to rebuilding

- The community needs to feel that it has agency in policies and programs aimed at reducing the disparities that impact them.
