This Senator Cannot Become Attorney General

Tell the US Senate to “Vote NO on Sessions." We don’t want an Attorney General who will not protect the rights of women, immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ and Muslim communities.

We are opposed to President-elect Trump’s choice of Senator Jeff Sessions as United States Attorney General. As an elected official, Sessions has opposed civil rights and immigrants at every turn. The nation's top legal position cannot be a platform to fully disenfranchise and deny the rights of people of color, immigrants, women, LGBTQ and Muslim communities. Now is the time to make sure that we hold Congress accountable and prevent this from happening.

Based on his record, we believe Sen. Sessions has consistently undermined America's constitutional commitment to equality and is absolutely unqualified to head the U.S. Department of Justice and enforce the laws of our nation. In 1986, Sessions’s nomination to the federal judiciary was voted down by the Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee due to his comments about the Ku Klux Klan and African Americans. Since then, as a U.S. Senator, Sessions has led the charge against immigration reform and advocated for mass deportations and extreme visa restrictions.

In the week following the Presidential election, the nation has seen a rise in hate-based crimes, harassment, and vandalism. Senator Sessions is not the type of leader who will stem this tide of racist and xenophobic violence against our communities. We need an Attorney General who will act as a fair and balanced decision maker and who does not have a history of animosity against the very communities his office should be protecting.

We demand that the President-elect immediately withdraw Sen. Sessions name from consideration for U.S. Attorney General.  We urge members of Congress to vote against Sessions in commitment to our values as an inclusive democracy.
