Trumpcare is an attack on Seniors

The plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act being pushed by House Republicans -- known as Trumpcare -- cuts Medicaid funding by more than $880 billion dollars over the next decade. That massive cut will mean less care for fewer people.

With more than 10,000 seniors turning 65 every day, and more than 70% of them needing some form of long-term care, the demand for care will only go up in the coming years. Which is why we need more support for caregiving, not less. And since Medicaid pays for most nursing home stays as well, these cuts could lead to a crisis.

This week, we’ll celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the Affordable Care Act. The ACA helped stabilize Medicaid and offered positive modern changes to the program based on the real needs of families. It created programs, like Community First Choice, that helped more aging Americans live at home, with their families and communities, instead of in nursing homes. Repealing the ACA and slashing Medicaid would leave millions of families unable to afford in-home care.

This plan will make it harder for millions of Americans to afford long-term care -- whether at home or in a nursing home -- and eliminate incentives to keep that care high-quality and community-based. It puts everyone who needs care at risk.

Medicaid provides critical care for Americans of all ages, including long-term care coverage. For many people, it is the only option. Even middle class and well-off Americans will often rely on Medicaid for long-term care coverage after exhausting their own resources. People who worked hard to plan for retirement shouldn't have to spend down their savings while Trump gives a tax break to the wealthy. We demand that you reject Trumpcare and its reckless cuts to Medicaid, which will devastate the health, retirement security and wellbeing of millions of seniors, their families and their caregivers.
