Twitter: Stop Aiding Pro-Life Lies

Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter

Tell Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, to stop bending Twitter’s policy to aide anti-abortion lies. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) was originally denied advertisement on Twitter for falsely claiming that Planned Parenthood sold “baby body parts.”

Allowing advertisers to outright lie to the public is not only bad business practice, it’s also illegal as stated by the Federal Trade Commission. Yet, Twitter not only reinstated Blackburn’s ad the same day, Twitter’s senior strategist on public policy Nick Pickles apologized to her during a House Judiciary Committee hearing.

“Our decision to halt Congresswoman Blackburn’s campaign launch advertisement was a mistake and when it was brought to our attention we in fact rectified it the same day. We apologized to her campaign at the time and would like to apologize to her again today,” said Pickles.

Not only is this dangerous, but it sets a precedent that abortion opponents can advertise outrageous, inflammatory claims against abortion providers without evidence. We demand that Dorsey uphold Twitter’s ad policy which states “Ads making misleading or deceptive claims are prohibited.”

Stop bending to the will of anti-abortion leaders who seek to spread lies and misinformation. Rep. Marsha Blackburn’s (R-TN) advertisement claim that Planned Parenthood sold “baby body parts” is not only untrue, but also dangerous rhetoric.

Rep. Blackburn’s false statement uses language from the bogus Center for Medical Progress videos against Planned Parenthood. These videos directly fanned the flames of violence including at a Planned Parenthood health center in Colorado Springs where innocent people were killed and injured in a mass shooting.

The decision to not only reinstate Rep. Blackburn’s ad, but then to have Twitter’s senior strategist on public policy Nick Pickles apologize to her during a House Judiciary Committee hearing is unacceptable.

I demand that you uphold Twitter’s ad policy which states “Ads making misleading or deceptive claims are prohibited.” Adhere to your own policy and stop the spread of pro-life lies.
