Uncap the House of Representatives
Members of Congress
Ever wondered why The House of Representatives have been capped at only 435 seats? Are you in an area where you feel unrepresented or that your needs are not being met? You are not alone. With the house being capped for so long many don't get fairly represented in their districts. Many Americans don't have congressional representatives that even live in their own community. This makes it nearly impossible for hardworking Americans to get their needs met in order to thrive and live a happy life. They are not being fairly represented. I find this unacceptable as a concerned hardworking American myself.
According to Brookings, the House of Representatives has been capped at 435 seats since 1929, except for a brief period from 1959 to 1963. This method gives more representation to those living in smaller states than those living in larger states. As a result, many people don't get fairly represented. Why is this an issue? Well, the bigger states have more people in them and that is a problem if there is not enough congressional representation to meet the needs of a larger number of citizens and constituents. Essentially this violates the principle of one person one vote. Senator of Massachusetts Daniel Webster first proposed a similar proposal in the 1830's that treats small and large states equally. The Wyoming Rule would require 574 seats based on the 2020 census. California would end up gaining the most seats as a result of uncapping the house. I passionately believe this would greatly improve the lives of every American having an increase of representation to those who need it most. This will make politics more exciting having a bigger house of representatives to meet the needs of hardworking Americans.
