UNSW Students: Pledge Support to Staff on Strike August 1st

Professor Ian Jacobs, University Council President and Vice-Chancellor, UNSW

BREAKING: UNSW Staff have called a 24 hour strike on August 1st after UNSW Vice Chancellor Ian Jacobs tried to force through wage cuts and a bad deal on teaching conditions for all UNSW staff. We stand to lose the quality learning conditions provided by our staff if this bad deal goes through.

We have the power to push back. The staff strike last semester, which saw students joining staff in walking off the job and picketing the entrances of the uni, prevented some of the worst changes to staff conditions in decades. But our staff need you to fight with them if we are to ensure that UNSW is a fair place to study and to work.

Pledge to support staff on strike to show Ian Jacobs that students want quality teaching and learning conditions. And on August 1st, stand with staff in their fight for a fair university by skipping class or joining staff on the picket line.

Our staff are currently fighting for the future of their conditions and pay with the university through the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA), a contract that sets out terms for staff childcare, leave, and sick pay. But the university isn’t playing nice. Our staff are being asked by our Vice Chancellor, Ian Jacobs, to work harder, for longer, for less. More than 230 employees have lost their jobs in the last year, centralising administrative services that means less tailored assistance for staff and students. Trimesters will mean that teachers and non-academic staff will be working longer and harder for the same pay, reducing our quality of learning. Our teaching and learning conditions are on the line. Even after a full day strike last semester, Ian Jacobs is still proposing wage cuts to our teaching and professional staff.

Students and staff, the lifeblood of the university, have the opportunity to show management that we won’t stand for lower standards. If students stand with staff to oppose these changes to conditions, we can ensure that the university gives us all a fair deal on the accessibility and quality of our education.

By pleading to support staff on strike, you can show Ian Jacobs that students want quality teaching and learning conditions, and show our staff that they have the support of students in fighting for the future of our education. On August 1st, stand with staff in their fight for a fair university by skipping class or joining staff on the picket line.

Strike Day Details
The picket line starts at 8am sharp, and lasts throughout the day, although the morning is the critical time to talk to students and staff. The bulk of our job will be leafleting and talking to students and staff about why the strike day is taking place and what they can do to help. There will be food. There will be friends. There will be glorious chanting.

Meet students the Anzac Parade entrance from 8am onwards and stay throughout the day.

And most importantly, ~Don't cross the picket line~. If you want to study, study at home, the NSW Library, or even USYD.

WHAT TO BRING:
- Water Bottle + Sun protection
- Smiling faces
- Your friends
