Urgent Petition Against 605-613 Bridgeway Condo Development

Mayor and City Council of Sausalito

Help us Protect Sausalito's Historic District!

A huge 9-story, 109-foot ultra-luxury building that doesn't follow Sausalito regulations has been proposed right in the middle of our Historic District.

We are asking our City Council to reject it and make sure new projects obey Sausalito’s code and respect our City's unique historic character.

We need to get loud and make our voice heard. If this project is approved as proposed there will be irrevocable harm to our Historic District, setting up a domino effect of similar projects. It will be the end of our historic district and city's special character.

Prior generations of citizens have worked to protect this district and Sausalito's other local resources, such as the Marin headlands so that we can enjoy them today.

This is our moment to step up and protect our historic district for ourselves, our community...and future generations.

We residents and business owners in Sausalito write in strong opposition to the luxury condominium development at 605-613 Bridgeway.

This project does not comply with local rules and regulations and should be returned to the applicant for redesign to fit with Sausalito’s code and unique historic character.

We urge you to reject the application as incomplete and not accept any future application that does not meet all requirements.

We oppose this project as proposed because:

• Standing 109 feet tall and spanning 9 stories, it defies local regulations.

• The proposed project will irreparably damage one of California's twelve historic districts.

• It casts a shadow over homes and businesses, diminishing their value and quality of life, and establishes a dangerous precedent for future development.

• Located on an unstable hill prone to landslides, it further endangers our neighborhood.

• The loss of light and views, coupled with decreased parking and increased traffic, will deteriorate our quality of life.

• It violates Ordinance 1022 and zoning laws, putting at risk our community's historical integrity and visual harmony. (see below)

We support responsibly designed new residential developments and affordable housing, but this is not it.

This current development proposal is to build 59 mostly ultra luxury condominiums and with 8 "affordable" units hidden with no view against a hill. There is no protection to make sure these few units remain affordable forever.

We depend on you, our elected officials, to defend our homes and community. This project must be redesigned to comply with current law, city codes and to fit Sausalito’s unique historic character!

Please reject this application.

* (Voter mandated Ordinance 1022 limits height to 32 feet with no additional density as well as the required use of Secretary of the Interior's standards for development in historic districts which states "New construction will not destroy historic features and spatial relationships... [it] shall be compatible with historic materials, features, size, scale and proportion and massing to protect the integrity of [the] environment.")
