URGENT: We Can't Afford New Charter Schools

Sen. Martin Looney, Rep. Sharkey, Sen. Duff, and Rep. Aresimowicz

State budget negotiations have become heated. Governor Malloy has made it a priority to include funding for two new charter schools but state House and Senate leaders have so far refused to include the $4.6 million charter advocates want for new schools in Stamford and Bridgeport.

The pressure on House Speaker Brendan Sharkey and Senate President Marty Looney to back down is intense. They need to hear messages of support from you TODAY.

Thank them for standing their ground against the governor and urge them to continue to block funding for two new charter schools.

Your caucuses have taken courageous steps to craft a budget that reflects the values of our state, including sending more dollars to underfunded school districts rather than funding two new charter schools we can’t afford.

I know the pressure on you is intense to relent and establish new charter schools at the expense of our traditional neighborhood schools, but I want you to know that my colleagues and I stand behind you in these efforts. Your support means the world to us.

Please continue to stand strong against Governor Malloy and protect the schools that educate ALL children – our traditional neighborhood public schools.

Thank you.
