UW Go 100% Renewable energy

President Cauce,

We are a coalition of students who believe that we must stop our reliance on fossil fuels and slow the damage greenhouse gases are doing to the environment and, indirectly, to us. With renewable energies like wind and solar becoming more affordable and reliable by the year, now is the time to commit to a greener future.

Unfortunately, UW still uses fossil fuels for much of its power needs, such as electricity, transportation, and heating. We are asking the university to commit to converting entirely to renewable energy sources by the year 2050, make ongoing and substantial investments in sustainable infrastructure, and increase transparency on what efforts are being made. While this commitment will be an ongoing effort, we expect to see actionable plans made and executed in order to ensure that this timeline is met.

America’s colleges and universities are significant users of energy and influential institutions in their communities. Action by the University of Washington and other colleges and universities to move towards a clean, renewable future will set an example for the rest of the nation.

We are encouraged by pledges to meet carbon emission targets and recent actions towards achieving those goals. To meet those goals, we urge a strong commitment to a steady transition away fossil fuels.

In order to build on the progress that has been made and ensure that we transition to a clean and renewable future, we urge you to put the University of Washington on a path to powering all operations with clean, renewable energy by no later than 2050 and for all electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030.
