Virginia Air Board: Deny MVP's Permit!

To the Members of the Virginia Air Pollution Control Board

Add your voice in opposition to the Mountain Valley Pipeline “Southgate” and its polluting Lambert Compressor Station.

The Mountain Valley Pipeline has harmed communities and water resources for years. This project, and its related issues are fundamental to the rights of people. It’s not just about the environment; fossil fuel pipelines threaten Indigenous sovereignty, human rights, drinking water, our communities, social justice, and the climate we all depend on. That’s why we need to keep resisting them and standing together. That is why we need your help in opposing the Mountain Valley Pipeline, it’s “Southgate” Extension and the Lambert Compressor Station.

Petition to APCB

To the Members of the Virginia Air Pollution Control Board:

CC: Director David Paylor

Please deny the air permit for Mountain Valley Pipeline’s Lambert Compressor Station. It is part of a dangerous and poorly constructed extension of MVP’s mainline that has, and will, continue to harm communities along its path. The Lambert Compressor Station would be the polluting connector between the disastrous Mountain Valley Pipeline mainline and its “Southgate” extension. The communities in the proposed location Chatham, VA should not be subjected to yet another polluting piece of infrastructure, and its toxic emissions including: formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, hydrogen disulfide, carbon monoxide(CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and methane. The permit review should not even be moving forward at this time, considering the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s has rejected the Southgate water permit, and the MVP project’s uncertainty.

Both the Lambert Compressor station’s proposed location in Pittsylvania County, VA, the traditional homelands of the Saura, Saponi, Monacan, and Occaneechi Nations, and the “Southgate” extension route in Rockingham and Alamance Counties NC, are sites of huge cultural importance. Black and Indigenous farming communities have been on the frontlines of fighting pipeline construction here in the southeast—and the communities impacted by Southgate know the danger of bringing more unnecessary fossil fuel projects to their homes.

At a time of rapidly accelerating climate change, we can’t afford to burn any more fossil fuels. Super storms, droughts, and wildfires are already endangering people’s lives across the globe. As clean, renewable energy becomes cheaper and more widely available by the day, oil and gas companies are desperate to lock in a few more years of profits at the planet and humanity’s expense. The faster we stop them, the better chance we have at a stable, honest, and peaceful future.

Contrary to what fossil fuel companies would like you to believe, pipelines don’t actually contribute to long-term job stability for communities, because once construction is over, so are most of the jobs. Pipelines companies are desperately clinging onto a dying industry, and oil and gas executives clearly have a vested interest in keeping their pockets lined. Corporations like MVP, LLC do not care about the impacted communities, and cannot relate to our struggles and lived experiences. The whims of profiteers should not be prioritized over people. Projects which harm communities should not be allowed.

This cannot continue. Deny the air permit for the Mountain Valley Pipeline’s Lambert Compressor Station.
