Walmart Must Take Action Following Death of Child in Formerly Owned Store Now Immigrant Detention Center
Walmart, Inc.
When Walmart sold its former Brownsville, Texas property, it did so to a company that listed a known child immigrant detention operator, Southwest Key Programs Inc., as its financial backer in the sale. The operator’s name was spelled out in black and white right on the deed.
Now, a 16-year old, unaccompanied child has died at the detention center housed in the former Walmart store now known as Casa Padre, the largest licensed migrant children’s shelter in the country, and Walmart remains silent.
By signing this petition you are telling Walmart to:
Immediately donate the $4.5 million it received from the sale of its Brownsville, Texas property to support refugee aid in honor of the child who died in its former store
And enact policies to prevent former buildings from ever being used as child immigrant detention facilities again.
Walmart pledges to be a community partner and this is an opportunity for the retail giant to take responsibility and honor that pledge. Walmart can and must ensure its former properties never end up being used to keep families separated. Walmart must do the right thing and donate all profits from the sale of this building.
If Walmart can prevent the properties it sells from becoming ‘adult video stores’ or ‘bar night clubs’ in its deed restrictions, then surely Walmart can prevent such buildings from becoming child prisons.
The largest corporation in America has the ability to ensure that it will never be a part in creating something as devastating and damaging like this again.
Walmart can and must do better.
