We welcome immigrants in Wyoming

Governor Gordon recently made a racist statement that follows in the trend of elected leaders scapegoating people of color and immigrants in an effort to gain votes and campaign donations. While racist comments like these benefit people in power financially and politically, they have a very different effect on the immigrant community in Wyoming. These kinds of statements send a very clear message that, currently, Wyoming has elected officials and people in power who have no empathy for refugees or asylum seekers. The fact that Wyoming elected officials that do not want immigrants coming to Wyoming shows they fear this inevitable change, that this country and state is growing more and more diverse and no amount of hate or anti immigrant policies will be able to stop that. Immigrants are here and they are not going anywhere.


Governor Gordon’s statements show a lack of responsibility and care for the people who call Wyoming home. When elected officials label human beings as “the others'' and use them to fear monger they empower and embolden racist attacks on people of color and immigrants. This is what fuels hateful violence. While we call for better from our elected leaders, we will not depend on a false hope that they will change. In the governor’s statement, he said, “The Wyoming Office of Homeland Security has advised our office that they are not aware of any federal immigration plans that include Wyoming.” This shows clearly that Governor Gordon is using a non existent problem as a cheap way to gain support at the expense of immigrants’ safety in Wyoming. This also brings to light the repeating trend of elected officials proving we are undeserving of the title of “The Equality State.”

Just because people in power are anti-immigrant, does not mean Wyomingites are anti-immigrant. Immigrants are part of every community in Wyoming and they are helping to revive the rural communities that have been economically dwindling over the years. These are hard working, good people who love Wyoming and are an essential part of who we are as a state. Wyomingites have shown time and time again they stand with immigrants. They showed this when they said no to a privately run immigration detention center and ran two private prison companies out of the state. Wyoming showed this again when they established a statewide Rapid Response Network to document the abuse Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) and the PoliMigra have perpetrated on immigrants in Wyoming and to support immigrant families in need.

Our governor and some may not have compassion for people seeking a better life, but we do. Juntos is committed to advocating for immigrant’s rights, calling out hate and racism, and organizing to fight for a better Wyoming for everyone. Aquí estamos y no nos vamos!

We are calling on people in Wyoming to show their support for their immigrant friends, family, and neighbors by signing this petition telling Governor Gordon we welcome immigrants in Wyoming and to stop using immigrants to fear monger.

El Gobernador Gordon recientemente hizo unos comentarios racistas que sigue a la tendencia en líderes elegidos de culpar a personas de color e imigrantes de los problemas de la comunidad en un esfuerzo para ganar votos y donadores de campaña. Aunque los comentarios racistas benefician a los que están en el poder en lo financiero y político, estos tienen un efecto diferente en la comunidad migratoria en Wyoming. Este tipo de declaraciones envían un mensaje transparente que, presentemente, Wyoming tiene elegido a oficiales y personas en poder las cuales no tienen empatía para los refugiados y solicitantes de asilo. Inmigrantes están aquí y no se van a ir a ningún lado.

Los comentarios del Gobernador Gordon indican poca responsabilidad y cuidado por las personas a quienes llaman a Wyoming su hogar. Cuando los oficiales elegidos etiquetan a seres humanos como “los otros” y los usan para causar miedo a la población ellos empoderan y hacen mas fuerte a los ataques racistas de personas de color e imigrantes. En la declaración del gobernador, él dijo, “La Oficina de Seguridad Nacional de Wyoming ha aconsejado a nuestra oficina que ellos están informados de planes de imigracion que incluyen a Wyoming.” Esto claramente indica que el Gobernador Gordan está utilizando un problema que no existe como una forma barata de ganar a apoyo a costo de la seguridad de inmigrantes en Wyoming. Estas son personas trabajadoras y buenas las cuales aman a Wyoming y son partes esenciales de quienes somos como un estado. Las personas de Wyoming han demostrado muchas veces que apoyan a inmigrantes. Dijeron que no a un centro de detención de inmigrantes de gestión privada y corrieron a dos empresas de prisiones privadas fuera del estado. Wyoming ha indicado este apoyo otra vez cuando establecieron la Red de Respuesta Rápida en todo el estado para documentar el abuso de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas o ICE y lo que la PoliMigra ha causado en inmigrantes en Wyoming, y para apoyar a las familias inmigrantes necesitadas.

Nuestro gobernador y algunos otros tal vez no tengan compasión por las personas que están buscando una mejor vida, pero nosotros sí. Juntos está comprometido a defender los derechos de los inmigrantes, denunciando el odio y el racismo, y organizándose para luchar por un Wyoming mejor para todos. Aquí estamos y no nos vamos!
