Young Metro Detroit Jews & Allies Ask Rep. Haley Stevens to #SkipTheTrip

Congressmember Haley Stevens

For decades, AIPAC — through its educational arm, the American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF) — has been taking every Freshman Congressperson to Israel during their first August recess. These one-sided delegations go out of their way to paint a false picture of Israel, and fail to grapple with the brutal reality of Israel’s military occupation of millions of Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem.

This year, for the first time, Freshman Congresspeople are publicly rejecting AIPAC’s offer. First Rashida Tlaib (the first Palestinian Congresswoman), who also announced her intention to have her own delegation for Congressional reps to see the Occupation for themselves. Then, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez turned down AIPAC’s offer. As reported recently in The Intercept, Haley Stevens is the only Freshman Congressmember from Michigan attending the AIPAC trip.

If we want our political leaders to make the right policy decisions that will result in freedom and dignity for all Israelis and Palestinians, they need to know the truth about the Occupation. Rashida Tlaib and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez know that AIPAC won’t provide the truth, and are boldly seeking it out for themselves.

Now it’s time for Haley Stevens to join them in taking this common sense step, and publicly commit to #SkipTheTrip. AIPAC is one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington, and their legitimacy is at stake — let’s show that true progressives stand up for Palestinian rights and refuse to support another 50 years of Occupation.

Congresswoman Haley Stevens, we urge you to #SkipTheTrip. Don’t go on AIPAC’s one-sided Israel delegation, and support freedom and dignity for all Israelis and Palestinians.
