Beckley Candidate Training (By and For Women)
Start:Saturday, June 10, 2017• 9:00 AM
End: Saturday, June 10, 2017• 5:00 PM
The WV Candidate Training Academy is a non-partisan coalition that is dedicated to recruiting and training new candidates for office. We believe that democracy works better when more of us are involved in the political process, and when government is more representative. By purchasing a ticket to this Beckley "Ready to Run" Candidate Training, you are registering for our day-long Candidate Training on Saturday, June 10th.
The WV Candidate Training Academy was started in 2015 by a coalition of organizations and partners of every stripe - including the WV Healthy Kids and Families Coalition, Generation WV, the WV Chamber of Commerce Executives, the AFL-CIO, the Sierra Club, WV Community Development Hub, WV Citizen Action Group, the WV Center on Budget and Policy, the WV School Board Association, and the Secretary of State's Office. Our lead partners are the Our Children, Our Future Campaign and the WV Women's Commission.
In 2017, together we are offering two versions of our training:
1. Candidate Training Academy (All are Welcome) - offered in Charleston (5/16), Logan (7/15), and Martinsburg (8/5)
2. Ready to Run (By and For Women) - offered in Morgantown (4/29) and Beckley (6/10)
Both of these trainings are intensive, day-long skills trainings that cover the basics: stump speech, communications, building your campaign team, and raising money. Both trainings are deeply interactive and include dynamic panelists and guest speakers who have run for office or who are deeply involved in politics. The Ready to Run trainings are based on a curriculum out of Rutgers that is designed and taught by and for women.
The training you are signing up for now is a Ready to Run training in Beckley, by and for women. Visit www.ocofwv.org/candidate training to sign-up for a different date.
The Candidate Training Academy curriculum was developed by West Virginians, drawing from existing candidate trainings across the political spectrum. Graduates of our training programs have won State House, State Senate, City Council, Magistrate, School Board, and County Commission races. (The trainings are both designed to be comprehensive; folks will get a similar skills baseline from either.)
In West Virginia, young people, women, people of color, and working class people are all dramatically under-represented in elected office. Furthermore, less than half of us vote in most elections. We hope you will help us change that. You should run for office!
Can't afford to register? There are limited scholarships available. If you are interested in one, please contact Julie Palas at firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, contact information, and a paragraph about why you want to run for office. (Also make sure to mention which training you are applying for.
Child care available at all events, for no additional charge. Contact Lisa Springstead with any questions at email@example.com.
