Dear {{ FirstName | default: 'Friend' }},
Key actions for the upcoming week include the following:
If you look at our calendar on the IHB website or at all the action items in today's Sunday email, you will see important activities for almost every day of the week, sometimes more. We have need of your skills, whether you are an artist, a writer, an advocate, a public speaker, an attorney, a rally enthusiast, a willing worker, whatever your gift, there is a need for it in our endeavor. Just remember our motto,
Pick your lane, Pick your speed, And do Something!
The IHB Leadership Team
Mark Your Calendar - This Monday we will again be at our New Location
Continuing on Monday, April 13, we'll be trying out a new location to accommodate our ever-growing membership.
Here's what you need to know about our new space:
We're excited about this change and will test the new space by meeting there on Monday, April 13. Silverside has ample seating (150 or so) and plentiful parking. The church staff are happy to welcome us. The church does not serve beverages, but we are free to bring in, and take out, beverages of our choice.
Any questions, contact Nancy Hannigan, njhannigan@yahoo.com or 302-304-2184.
The RESISTANCE WORK GROUP UPDATE is the new umbrella for the RALLY TEAM, IHB PUSH BACK, and some IMMIGRATION TEAM initiatives.

(Next week’s Honk and Wave – April 23rd at 4:30 - will be across from the Fraim Center, 669 S. Union Street. Theme: Same as above AND promote May Day Strong.).
‼️ This Friday, April 17th - Bridge Visibility Brigade (every Friday, same time)
‼️ 2. Make plans to participate in IHB's May Day Strong Actions – May 1st
We must keep up the momentum - keep building and flexing our resistance muscles - to save our democracy! As an immediate follow-up to No Kings 3, please join us this coming May Day for the "Workers Over Billionaires" National Day of Action where we will all stand together to demand:
Thousands of organizations are organizing a day of economic disruption. We need everyone in the fight for our democracy to simply “not cooperate” – to withhold our labor, our money, and our participation. On May 1st – International Workers’ Day – that looks like: No Work. No School. No Shopping. This day of noncooperation enables us to continue to build the power needed to stop the billionaire agenda and build a future for our families.
IHB's plans include two parts:
Final details and a sign-up link are coming soon, but please save the date/time on your calendar now! We will contact everyone who signs-up (a few days before May 1), to confirm your specific intersection along Rt. 2.
‼️ 3. Two Other Protest Opportunities (Hosted by IHB Partners):
A “Signs of Fascism” silent witness is being organized by IHB member Ken Brick and needs participants; inquire about details directly to Ken (text or call 302-494-2590 and/or kenbrick@verizon.net). This would be a once per month, Sunday or Saturday (to be determined), prescheduled event, for 1 - 2 hours in locations in New Castle County and easternmost PA. Signs will be provided. Participants dress in all black and walk/stand in silent witness for that time. Ten to seventeen participants are needed. (Okay to get “stand ins” any month not available.).
April 13 - 14: We are America March is marching again from Philladelphia to DC and coming through Wilmington tomorrow and Tuesday. Please participate and/or support this effort as you are able!
If you have questions, please contact Nancy Wahler: nancywahler@gmail.com.
!! SUMMARY: IHB Push Back, part of the Resistance Work Group (RWG), aims to make it difficult for companies, institutions, and organized groups that are supporting the Trump Regime to continue to do so. Our goal is to make it embarrassing, uncomfortable, or financially disadvantageous for these companies/institutions to continue to support the Regime, by making the public, and especially their customers, aware of their actions.
If you are interested in what we are doing, join us. We meet every Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. by Zoom. Contact Deb at dstravers@comcast.net to get the link.
!! IHB Push Back continues to support the following initiatives which are focused on the Business pillar:
New Pillar: Education Pillar
We continue our action with the Legal Pillar for immigrants in danger of being deported.
But first, we tap into the Labor Pillar for our new economic boycott.
1.!! NEW - MAY DAY STRONG
Summary: Mass noncooperation takes coordination, training, and sustained effort. It takes all of us, talking to our neighbors, building relationships, and getting organized. And then, at a certain point, it becomes real and substantial enough to make mass change.
Noncooperation is simple in principle: we withhold our labor, our money, and our participation. We don’t go along. On May 1 (International Workers’ Day), that looks like no work – no school – no shopping! Workers, students, and families across the country are acting together to demand:
Here’s the kickoff video from last Monday’s meeting: https://www.instagram.com/reels/DTyybq6EbF4/.
IHB will hold a series of Honk-and-Waves along Kirkwood Highway – See the Rally Update section for more details.
If you can’t be in the streets, you can still participate: If you can shut your business for the day or stay home from work and school. Teachers – show your students what it means to stand-up for your rights, teach them about workplace strikes, hold a “Recess or Study Hall” protest.
But here’s something every one of us can do: DON’T SHOP! Especially with the Billionaires – Boycott Amazon, Walmart, Target. And take the pledge:
https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/8705046/WOB-NO-WORK-NO-SCHOOL-NO-SHOPPING.
There will be a robust social media campaign to GTWO (Get The Word Out). When you see an announcement on our IHB Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok pages, share it to on your personal page.
For more information, contact Deb at dstravers@comcast.net.
!! 2. SHAME ON CITIZENS BANK. (NEW ACTION THIS WEEK!)
Summary: We want to force Citizens Bank (CB) to quit funding CoreCivic and GEO, who build and run the for-profit prisons used to hold ICE detainees under deplorable conditions. Even with all the press coverage for the 11-state, multi-site protest on March 7, in the Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Rachel Maddow Show, Citizens Bank has not backed down. Dan Fitzpatrick, President of Mid-Atlantic Region has not responded to a request for a meeting. So, let’s keep up the pressure.
Action: Citizens Bank Annual Shareholders Meeting will be held in Rhode Island on April 23. Please EMAIL Kristin Silberberg, Head of Investor Relations Kristin.Silberberg@citizensbank.com to let her know that we are using social media to make shareholders aware of their immoral actions:
Sample Email: Please customize with your own words!
Continue to re-post Deb’s IHB Facebook social media posts to your own Facebook page.
For more information, contact Deb at dstravers@comcast.net.
!! 3. NEW - PURGE PALANTIR FROM POLITICS
Summary: Palantir, a multi-billion-dollar surveillance company run by far-right billionaires Peter Thiel and Alex Karp, is trying to curry favor with key Committee Members on the Appropriations, Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Foreign Relations Committees. It’s time to tell Congress to take the pledge - no dirty Palantir money! We are joining the American Friends Service Committee’s (AFSC) Purge Palantir from Politics campaign, to keep dirty Palantir money from reaching our MOC’s campaigns. AFSC launched Palantir Payroll - a donation tracker that reveals which Democrats and Republicans that receive Palantir donations. Check out the full list here: https://purgepalantir.com/the-palantir-payroll/.
We discovered Senator Chris Koon’s name on the list with a modest donation of $27,500 from Palantir. Nancy Martin of our IHB Push Back Team contacted Senator Coons on behalf of IHB to make him aware of this. Nancy asked him to donate the contribution to the Delaware HELP organizations, who are working to help immigrant families with food, healthcare, legal aid getting them to their immigration court appointments. We are awaiting his response. We are not aware of any contributions to Senator Blunt-Rochester or Representative McBride.
Action: Send an email to Senator Lisa Blunt-Rochester and Representative Sarah McBride using Democracy I/O asking them to take the pledge to decline any contributions from Palantir. Click HERE for a sample email, but please modify it, using your own words.
Purge Palantir Pledge: https://secure.ngpvan.com/sdbxf9Zrhkej0p5d5oW0eQ2.
Background: One of ICE’s top corporate collaborators and technology enablers is Palantir Technologies, a multi-billion-dollar surveillance company run by far-right billionaires Peter Thiel and Alex Karp. Palantir donates MILLIONS in political donations to Congress and receives BILLIONS in federal contracts. Palantir’s technology helps ICE track, abduct, and arrest people.
For more information, contact Deb at dstravers@comcast.net.
!! 4. No Detention Camp Labor! (NDCL)
Summary: We are partnering with the Indivisible Philadelphia Group on a campaign to target companies that use cheap prison labor (or use vendors who do so). Unfortunately, this is legal and considered part of the punishment. A few of these companies have crossed the line and started using ICE detainee labor, which is illegal. These companies get around this issue by calling the detainees “students”. We want assurances that these companies won’t start using immigrant detainees in this way.
We launched this letter writing campaign eleven weeks ago, inspired by Professor Timothy Snyder. So far over 800 people from the area are participating. For those of you who have been participating, thank you!
Action: We want companies to pledge NOT to use ICE detainee labor or use contractors that do. Letters will go out to two target companies each week. The letters should be mailed to the companies. Here’s the HOW TO:
For new participants, use this signup link. Use this link to the training video to get started. Here are this week’s companies:
This week’s companies are Archer Daniels Midland Company, a food manufacturing company that produces, processes, transports, stores, and merchandizes agricultural products, commodities, and ingredients, like wheat and corn, and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc., an American multinational chain of fried chicken restaurants. When you sign-up to write letters, you will get the background information on the companies and how they are using prison labor in their operations
If you did not participate in earlier weeks and you want to write to those companies too, here is the website page that features the companies from earlier weeks. You can write to them when you get a chance.
For more information, contact Deb at dstravers@comcast.net.
!! 5. KEEP ICE CONTRACTORS OUT OF COLLEGE ATHLETICS
Summary: Colleges and Universities routinely use charter flights to get their athletes to “away” games. Unfortunately, some of these charter companies also work for ICE, running deportation flights. Human Rights First has been publishing a monthly report on ICE flights. One of these airlines, GlobalX, had a $5M contract for teams participating in the NCAA March Madness tournament. To see the full report click HERE.
We want local colleges and universities, or your alma mater to "de-ICE" their athletic departments.
Action: Contact the Alumnae Office or Athletic Department at your alma mater and ask them which airline flies their athletes to away games. If it’s one of these, implore them to find another airline. You can threaten to withhold alumnae donations.
Sample Letter:
Background:
A plane carries 157 people to a detention camp in chains. Hours later, a college athletic team boards the same plane, buckles into the same seats, and flies to a game. Your university may be booking one of these flights. Your tuition and our tax dollars are paying for this, along with your alumnae donations, or athletic Booster Club. Also, some of these airlines have poor safety records and other regulatory issues.
If you have questions, please contact Gayle Gibson: gibeck@comcast.net.
!! 6. CALLING ALL PRACTICING OR RETIRED ATTORNEYS
Summary: IHB Push Back is teaming-up with Beth Anne Gluck’s Immigration Advocacy Team to identify practicing, retired, and out-of-state attorneys to fill gaps in the legal process for immigrants who are being threatened with detention and deportation.
Action: Pro bono attorneys are needed to (1) draft habeas petitions in federal court for detainees and/or (2) represent detainees in the immigration administrative court, located in Philadelphia. There are several nonprofits leading the charge on these volunteer positions. For those who have not done habeas work before, the nonprofits would like the attorney to take a training prior to volunteering.
Background: The Immigration Court system is buried right now with all of the new detainees being rounded up for deportation. There aren’t enough immigration attorneys or judges to manage the workload. Timing is critical to file the necessary briefs before the detainee is deported without due process.
If you would like more information on the processes and the nonprofits, please reach out to Tricia McCarthy at tricia.ann.mccarthy@gmail.com.

2. School board elections are coming up all across Delaware on Tuesday, May 12th. Make your plan to vote now!
As you know, when we invest in our public schools, it’s not just good for the children who attend them; it’s ultimately good for each of us and for our entire community. As ACLU-DE says, “By choosing who shapes our schools, we shape the future of our entire communities.” To read more about some of the issues impacted by our school boards, click HERE. Please make it a priority to be a school board voter and encourage your neighbors and friends to do the same!
In consultation with education leaders in our community, IHB is not “endorsing” any specific candidate this year or organizing the “Dear Neighbor” letter/lit drop as we have done in the past. [Note: IHB first got actively involved in school board races several years ago when MAGA-type candidates (remember Patriots of Delaware? Moms for Liberty?). Because there are no similar threatening candidates in our area running for school board this time around, the Electoral Work Group is not recommending specific candidates or organizing volunteers on their behalf.].
Please review the candidate’s websites, come to IHB’s Monday meeting on April 27, to hear from Yvonne Johnson (Lead School Board Consultant for First State Educate; President of the National PTA), talk to friends and neighbors, and decide for yourself who to vote for – but please DO vote.
Resources and Information to be an Informed School Board Voter:
!! 1. Join First State Educate tomorrow (Monday the 13th) via Zoom to learn about the importance of engaging in school board elections. To register, go to: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/7hjABlQBSxOY77Xc-U95og#/registration.
!! 2. Make your plan to vote on May 12th. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please note that your polling place may be different from the general election.
!! 3. Information about School Board Races in Northern New Castle County
For an overview of all races and filed candidates (and their websites), go to: https://elections.delaware.gov/candidates/candidatelist/sb_fcddt_2026.shtml#br.
Here’s a quick summary of each school board election in Northern NCC. (Note again: All residents of a school district are permitted to vote in each nominating district race, regardless of the nominating district in which they reside.).
Save the contact information below on your computer and/or in your phone:
[If you have not tried it, please take a look at Democracy I/O. This tool will allow you to send an e-mail to all three of our MOCs with just a few clicks.].
As part of our on-going advocacy efforts, the following are actions for your attention and action this week:
!! 1. To: ALL IHB members - Voting Rights Rally and the Senate vote for SB 3 (first leg of amendment process).
Summary: An opportunity to celebrate with other voting rights activists and legislators the passage of the voting bills (see below). Then you can be present for the final vote of SB 3 in the Delaware Senate to complete the first leg of the amendment. Bruce Dalleo, IHB Voting Rights team co-chair, will speak at the rally for IHB's involvement.
When: Tuesday, April 14, 1:00 p.m. Rally and 2:00 p.m Vote.
Where: Legislative Hall, 411 Legislative Avenue, Dover, DE 19901.
Details: Rally will be on the East steps of Legislative Hall (facing the Green) and the Vote in the chamber.
Bring a sign about voting, if you wish. For example: “Voting Matters”, “Your Vote is Your Voice”, “Expand Voting for ALL”.
Background: SB 2 (Early In-person Voting) passed the first leg of the amendment vote in both the DE House and Senate on March 26. SB 3 (No Excuse Absentee Voting) passed the DE House on March 26 and will have the final vote of the first leg of the amendment at 2:00 p.m. on April 14.
Permanent Absentee Voting was removed from the bill that the House passed and so the Senate needs to pass that amended bill. Permanent Absentee Voting remains available, but it needs to be put into the DE Constitution to protect it from future challenges. There is a movement to create another Constitutional amendment to do that.
Please let Bruce Dalleo (bdalleo@aol.com) know if you need a ride to Dover.
For more details, please contact Sally Barclay at sallybar913@gmail.com.
!! 2. To: All IHB Members – Immigration – Advocacy
Summary: From Indivisible National: On April 25, we’re joining Detention Watch Network and Disappeared in America for a coordinated, nationwide mobilization against the Trump administration's reckless expansion of ICE warehouse detention centers. We’re pushing local governments to:
Take Action: Sign-up for the training call on Tuesday, April 14 at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT. You’ll hear directly from organizers at a frontline site about what they're planning, receive resources to find out if a detention center is being planned in your area, and get tools and support to host a safe, peaceful, and effective event in your community. (The call will be recorded. If you can’t join us on Tuesday, please register and we’ll send you a link to the recording.).
Background: The warehousing of human beings is a hallmark of authoritarian regimes. These procurements are a threat to the basic human rights of our immigrant neighbors and the due process rights of everyone in this country.
For more details, please contact Beth Anne Gluck (bagluck@comcast.net).
!! 3. To: All IHB Members - Immigration Advocacy - Education
Summary: New Castle HELP, modeled after a successful Sussex HELP program, is a volunteer-driven effort to support Delaware's immigrant families in crisis as a result of a family member’s deportation or detention. Most of the time, it is the family breadwinner who is picked up, leaving women, children, and elderly family members vulnerable.
Take Action: Go to www.newcastlehelp.org to learn more about this program and how you can support it's work.
Background: Last year, over 500 people were apprehended by ICE in Delaware. Delaware’s immigrant neighbors, who live and work amongst us, are living in fear of being disappeared, detained, or deported. Children aren’t going to school, fearful of leaving home and not seeing their parents at the end of the school day. Health care practitioners are seeing fewer of their immigrant patients. Some immigrants are afraid to leave home to go to work, the grocery store, or attend services at their respective places of worship. We are a state of neighbors who look out for one another. Let's stand-up and show-up for our immigrant neighbors!
For more details, please contact Beth Anne Gluck (bagluck@comcast.net).
4. To: Senators Chris Coons and Lisa Blunt Rochester (contacts 1 and 2 above) and Representative Sarah McBride (contact 3 above).
Summary: Trump’s unauthorized war in Iran continues to escalate, resulting in retaliatory attacks killing civilians across the middle east. Now Congress is considering a request for billions more to fund this war, which most Americans do not support.
Take Action: Urge your members of Congress to oppose all funding for this war, to demand transparency and accountability from the administration, and to continue to support War Powers Resolutions to require congressional approval for continued hostilities in the Middle East.
Call Your Senator here: Tell Your Senators: End the Illegal War on Iran | Indivisible.
Call Your Representative here: Tell Your Representative: End the Illegal War on Iran | Indivisible.
Background: Indivisible provides more information on the issue here: Tell Congress: End the Illegal War on Iran | Indivisible Guide.
For more details, please contact Sheila Grant (sgrant62@gmail.com).
!! 5. To: All IHB members – Voting Rights - Lobby Day Opportunity - LAST OPPORTUNITY TO REGISTER.
Summary: Please consider registering to attend the Lobby Day for Voting Rights hosted by our partner, ACLU of Delaware.
Take action: Space is limited. Registration is required at this link: Click HERE.
Also, please text Sally Barclay (515-708-0489) if you need a ride or can take other members to Dover for this event.
Background: We have been working for several sessions, along with the ACLU of Delaware, to pass voting legislation. Early, In-person Voting (SB 2) and an amended version of No Excuse Absentee Voting (SB 3) passed the first leg of the amendment process on March 26. They will both need to pass again during the 2027-2028 Assembly.
This Lobby Day will be an opportunity to thank legislators for their support of these bills and to advocate for the remaining voting bills (below) directly with legislators.
For more details, please contact Sally Barclay at sallybar913@gmail.com.
