Motion on candidate selection process, from Jon Ashe.

Proposal for 18th October 2023  Exeter Green Party (EGP) members’ meeting

Selection of May 2024 Exeter City  Council election candidates

Motion proposed by Jon Ashe; and seconded by Adrian Thomas

Given the importance of:

(i) engaging EGP members as much as possible, for example by involving them in key decisions;

(ii) selecting our May 2024 Council election candidates in our target wards very soon, so that those wards can raise the profile of the chosen candidates in local campaigning and the candidates can start working in their wards;

(iii) helping to support EGP Executive Committee members, by reducing the demands made on them;

this EGP members’ meeting agrees that all the potential candidates who were nominated by 30th September, should be considered by all EGP members in an on-line voting process that should finish by 6th November .

The only exceptions should be if a particular candidate’s nomination statement or their recent interview panel showed that that candidate is clearly unsuitable, for example if they have views that indicate racism, sexism or anything else incompatible with the Green Party ethos and policies.

The above proposal seems entirely consistent with para 10.1 of the EGP constitution, which says: “The selection of elections candidates …….. shall be based on the principles of openness, fairness, inclusiveness, and allowing all members a vote on the final selections."

Note: If the motion above is passed at the 18th October members’ meeting, each candidate who had been nominated by 30th September could be invited to produce a 200 word statement, setting out their case for being selected, for circulation to members at the same time as the on-line voting papers. This might help to ensure that members could familiarise themselves with each candidate, before voting in the on-line process,
