Who we are:
Partnership for a Strong Rural Economy, is a group of community members and non-profit organizations, including North Carolina Black Alliance, Appalachian Voices, Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League and Down Home. The group came together when a local resident, Michael Savino, spoke at the public hearing for the Moriah Energy Center public hearing in December 2023, calling for a different vision for local economic development. Michael identified the need for local residents to develop their own plan for community-serving economic development that uplifts community strengths without jeopardizing health, safety, or the rural character of the area. The group aims to bring community members together to develop a shared vision for an economy that serves the community.
North Carolina Black Alliance - The North Carolina Black Alliance addresses policy and economic issues to enhance black communities by developing and promoting systemic policy change as well as youth and leadership development.
Appalachian Voices: Appalachian Voices brings people together to protect the land, air and water while empowering communities to develop economic solutions that foster long-term resilience.
Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League: The Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League is a regional, community-based, non-profit environmental organization. Working in rural and disadvantaged areas, our staff and volunteers put into practice the ideals of love of community and love of neighbor.
Down Home: Down Home builds power with poor, working-class, multi-racial people in North Carolina’s small towns and rural communities. In addition to electoral work Down Home base builds year round in 9 counties including Person County.
