Reduce Police Violence

Hello Fellow Pantsuiters!

If you are in the Houston area we need you all to make a social media blast today! We have an opportunity to make some meaningful change to how the City of Houston handles public safety issues, leading to a reduction in police violence and safeguarding the lives of the public and law enforcement officers. Please look at the script below and post to all council members social media! City Council will be voting on these budget amendments on Wednesday and we need them to support Dr. Plummer's proposals! Details below, please email, call, and write on their social media using the script below. Also sign up to speak in support of Dr. Plummer's proposals on Tuesday. Sign up to speak to City Council in support of this by calling the City Secretary's office at 832-393-1100 by Monday 5pm.

SCRIPT:

Hello, _____,

My Name is ______ and I’m writing on behalf of Pantsuit Republic and the community in general.
In light of the recent murder of George Floyd, and the protests that occurred in Houston, I am calling on you to vote for the amendments to the city budget proposed by Council Member Plummer.
We also continue to ask for accountability and body camera footage of the murders by police of Adrian Medearis, Nicholas Chavez, Christopher Aguirre, Randy Lewis, Rayshard Scales, and Joshua Johnson.
Please consider supporting your colleague Council member Leticia Plummers budget amendments that speak to some of our demands and asks and that provide further guidance on holding police accountable by re-purposing funding for an independent police oversight board with subpoena power, and increasing deescalation training. Here is an example of the tactics employed by HPD that we oppose: https://t.co/xLvtulOYNa?amp=1 . Here is an example of the tactics employed by HPD: https://t.co/xLvtulOYNa?amp=1
Before your vote on June 10th we ask that you consider all these factors before voting for the almost $1 billion budget for HPD that accounts for 17.2% of our city budget. Our communities deserve to feel safe and protected and that can be accomplished through funding for health and human services, public housing, mental healthcare, but not always police. Remember that not all communities, especially black and brown communities feel safe calling the police in a time of emergency. This money could be put to use more efficiently and I have confidence that you will know best where else it should be redistributed.
Thank you.
