Governments around the world lose $427 billion a year to tax abuse. As climate, development and economic crises intensify each year, the fight for global tax justice has taken on greater urgency.

In response, Global South activists are calling for wholescale tax reform – to push tax decision-making into more democratic fora and crack down on illicit flows by multinational corporations and wealthy individuals. There are also demands for these reforms to be part of a project of reparations for colonialism and the climate crisis. This would include a just distribution of global tax revenue to the economically-exploited and climate vulnerable communities around the world who need finance most.

These struggles at the global level mirror national efforts to fight for tax justice in the US. With a base of DSA members across the country already engaged in domestic taxation activism, this issue provides an entry point through which to discuss, understand and engage with crucial international economic and climate justice campaigns.

The focus of this series will be understanding the global tax system - how it is structured to reinforce patterns of colonial exploitation and imperialism, how tax abuse imperils development and climate goals, and how social movements across the world are responding to this challenge. There will be an emphasis on understanding the role of the US in setting up and maintaining the global tax system and what can be done to contest and transform this unjust system.

We hope to see you there!
