Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the evening of Friday, August 25th. In the ensuing days, southeast Texas was pummeled from above by the storm and from the southeast by the Gulf surge. By Wednesday, August 30th, FEMA's 230 shelters were housing more than 30,000 people¹. By Thursday, August 31st, more than 325,000 people had registered for federal assistance². A week later, Hurricane Irma, one of the largest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic, tore through the Caribbean islands, leaving a wake of devastation on its way to Florida.
The Hurricane Relief Network is a network of students on college and university campuses across the country working to help those impacted by these devastating hurricanes.
We aim to do this immediately through supply drives and fundraisers, and in the long term through service trips and even BIGGER fundraisers. The Washington Post reports that between 25-30% of Harris County - home to 4.5 million people - was flooded, and Hurricane Irma has destroyed 90% of the structures on the island of Barbuda. A full recovery will take years, and it can only happen with the whole country coming together. We're ready for the challenge.
