A Call to Action, Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki From Testing to Trident to Treaty

Start: Saturday, August 07, 202110:00 AM

End: Monday, August 09, 2021 9:00 AM

Dear Friends of a world free of nuclear weapons,

On August 6 and August 9, 1945 the United States became the first and only nation to ever use nuclear weapons against another. Even before those horrific events, on July 16, 1945 with the "Trinity" test the U.S. began what would become a long history of nuclear weapons testing at home and abroad, affecting people's health and displacing generations of Pacific Islanders.

Although the U.S. is by no means the only nation to perpetrate continuing nuclear crimes (and the associated threat of use of nuclear omnicide), we have a unique responsibility, as the only nation to have used nuclear weapons against another, to do everything in our power to prevent the unspeakable. This August is, therefore, much more than a time of remembrance; it is a time to say Never Again... and the only way to ensure that nuclear weapons are never used again is to abolish them. The U.S. bears the responsibility to lead the way (along with Russia of course, as the two nations hold roughly 93% of global nuclear warheads) to total and complete disarmament. And an important first step is to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Beyond that, it is time to stop stalling on the matter of No First Use - It is high time to commit to NO USE!!!

We invite you to join us at Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action this August 7th through 9th to remember and to rededicate ourselves to the struggle to abolish nuclear weapons. Ground Zero Center has a unique responsibility as our back yard (just across the fence line) contains the largest operational deployed concentration of nuclear weapons in the U.S. arsenal and is home to eight of the Navy's fourteen Trident ballistic missile submarines.

Rachel Hoffman of the Marshallese Women's Association will will speak about the injustice of nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands (Rachel's presentation, and possibly more, will be shared live on Zoom). We will also hear from Tara Villalba, who is with Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility. We will have music by singer/songwriter Tom Rawson, and much more. The culmination of the weekend will be Monday morning's vigil and nonviolent direct action, and flash dance by the Delaney Dancers (all are welcome to join the dance!).
