Advocacy Day: Protect From Extreme Risk

Start: 2018-03-06 08:40:00 UTC Central Time (US & Canada) (GMT-06:00)

This is a virtual event

Join us and the Kansas Chapter of the Brady Campaign to advocate for SB390, the Extreme Risk Protection Act.

Senator Bollier introduced SB390 into the Senate Judiciary Committee on February 7, 2018. The next step is for it to have a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

We have made appointments to talk to the Chair, Senator Rick Wilborn, and the Vice-Chair, Senator Julia Lynn, of the Senate Judiciary Committee to urge them to give this bill a hearing. If you are interested, please RSVP. It allows us to better coordinate the day.

Background

SB390, the Extreme Risk Protection Act, sponsored by Senator Bollier, “sets out a protocol for a judge to order the temporary removal of guns from an individual who is found to be a risk to him/herself or to others, including how to store and how to return those weapons. Current law does not provide a mechanism to request removal of guns temporarily, such as a person in a domestic violence situation, or a family that sees suicidal tendencies in another family member who is of age."

Research by the Giffords Law Center shows that domestic violence fuels mass shootings and assault. It has also revealed:

  • Abused women are five times more likely to be killed by their abuser if the abuser owns a firearm.
  • More than two-thirds of spouse and ex-spouse homicide victims between 1980 and 2008 were killed with firearms.
  • In 2011, nearly two-thirds of women killed with guns were killed by their intimate partners.

We will gather at the Statehouse in Topeka at 8:40AM at the entrance to the gift shop. It will be on the left-hand side after going through security.
