In this new book club meeting we will be reading chapters 4 & 5 uncovering how two prerequisite cases shaped how whiteness and by extension citizenship in the United States would look like. Chapter 4 looks at the cases of Ozawa and Thind and why Asian Americans according to US law are not white, while chapter 5 examines the contradictory and convoluted ways the US legal system constructs race, the role that judges play in shaping racial discourse. More importantly, what can we learn from these prerequisite cases about the ways in which race continues to impact what it means to be a citizen.
