Join us for aTeach-in: What Does Defunding Really Mean?
Join Sunrise Beaverton for a teach in as part of a national day of action in solidarity with Strike for Black Lives on Monday, July 20th to learn what defunding the police means and what it could look like in our city. Sunrise Beaverton and the community of Beaverton have laid the foundation for this conversation with city officials through weeks of verbal and written testimony and hosting various community events on the issues of 8can’twait and defunding the police. During the July 7th meeting, the Beaverton City council made a commitment to involve the community in an upcoming dialogue series on police operations and policy, but details have not been provided about how the general public will be included and no commitments have been made to consider or discuss defunding. Furthermore, the council has a planned 3 week summer break starting August 11th. The faux commitments from council, coupled with this summer recess is insulting and shows a lack of a sense of urgency to the community organizers and the concerned public.
We will be continuing our demands for the immediate adoption of the 8can’twait measures proposed by councilor Beaty more than a month ago and for significant reduction of the police budget and reinvestment in the essential social and community services our city needs such as emergency housing, health care and adequate funding for our schools.
The teach in will be held from 5pm to 6pm via Zoom
