Bike Brigade- Critical Mass Extinction
Start: Wednesday, October 09, 2019• 7:00 AM
End: Wednesday, October 09, 2019• 8:30 AM
Rebels on bikes, join us for a morning ride to protest government inaction in the face of the climate emergency.
We will gather at the Nicholson St end of the Royal Exhibition Building.
(Please ignore the map on the action network page, it is stubbornly refusing to budge from Nicholson St South Yarra.)
We will block a number of intersections along Gertrude, Hoddle and Johnston Streets, each for a short amount of time, in a slow, fun and rebellious critical mass style 'traffic jam on bikes'. High vis clothes and costumes, XR flags attached to bikes, etc welcome.
Extinction Rebellion (XR) is doing this action because we are in a climate and ecological emergency. To respond to this emergency, we will disrupt business as usual until government complies with our 3 demands:
1. TELL THE TRUTH Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.
2. ACT NOW Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
3. BEYOND POLITICS Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice. For more information about Extinction Rebellion, visit: https://ausrebellion.earth/
We acknowledge that we will be riding on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, and that sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
