Building a non-violent direct action campaign training Signup

Start: Monday, May 07, 2018 6:00 PM

The more we have signup the less the cost/person. We need at least five people.  If you are outside the local Wenatchee area you can pariticipate as part of the overall group and do the training with others in your area or even by yourself.

We wanted to let you know that there’s another chance to catch the excellent online training course, Building a Nonviolent Direct Action Campaign, offered by Eileen Flanagan from the Earth Quaker Action Team. The next 4 week session begins on May 7th!

350.org is co-sponsoring this course, which includes a mix of presentations, group discussions, small-group breakouts, and a little bit of reading and homework. Past sessions have had really good response and feedback, so we're happy to announce another round that will begin May 7th and meet the next four Mondays, ending May 28th. The course meets from 6:00-8:00 pm PT / 7:00-9:00 pm ET.

Building a Nonviolent Direct Action Campaign is for those who specifically want to learn how to use nonviolent direct action tactics, as contrasted to tactics like phone calls and letter writing.

While you can attend as an individual, we really want to encourage people to attend with others from their local 350 group–it's a great way to strengthen your collective skills, shared analysis, and strategic thinking. The regular price for this course is $499 for a group of five or more people, but 350.org is subsidizing the cost for local 350 group leaders, so you have access to a special rate of $199 per group! If you can’t round up a group, there is also a discounted individual rate. No one turned away for lack of funds; contact Deborah@350.org if you need additional financial support to participate.

More information on the course below; click on the link to sign up. And please share with others in your local group!

Building a Nonviolent Direct Action Campaign

Do you want to feel like what you do is actually having an impact on the issues you care about? In the face of hatred, injustice, and climate chaos, are you tired of being told simply to call your elected officials? Would you like to emulate the kinds of powerful tactics used by Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the campaign for women’s suffrage? If so, this online course will teach you the basics of nonviolent direct action campaigning, a proven method of building people power by shaking up the status quo through tactics that can range from fasting and boycotts to noncooperation and civil disobedience.

During our four classes together online, you will learn how to:

  • Choose an issue where you can actually make a difference.
  • Identify the people who you want to pressure and where they are vulnerable.
  • Develop creative tactics to make your actions effective, press-worthy, and often fun.
  • Build your impact over time, so the people you’re trying to pressure have to take you seriously.

In community with others, you will find support and a chance to strengthen your courage and leadership muscles. Each session will include a mixture of lesson and discussion. Recordings of the class sessions will be available in case you can’t make every one, along with additional materials and suggested homework.
