Friends of the Earth Cardiff, alongside local residents, are currently raising objections to the extension of planning permission granted for a wood-burning biomass plant on Rover Way, Cardiff. This planning permission sits alongside an existing waste incinerator and proposals for another just a stones throw away.

Ahead of the planning committee meeting which will decide the fate of the permission in the face of a climate and ecological emergency, we are inviting you to join us for a 45 minute film screening and Q&A with Biofuelwatch to learn more about the impact of burning wood for energy and how it currently represents a false net zero solution in UK public policy.

BURNED: Are Trees the New Coal? tells the little-known story of the accelerating destruction of our forests for fuel, and probes the policy loopholes, huge subsidies, and blatant green washing of the burgeoning biomass power industry. The film follows a dedicated group of forest activists, ecologists, carbon scientists, and concerned citizens who are fighting to establish the enormous value of our forests, protect their communities, debunk this false solution to climate change, and alter energy policy both in the US and abroad.

Mary S. Booth, PhD Director and Ecosystem Ecologist Partnership for Policy Integrity

“Yes, these trees may grow back in time, but we don't have 50, 70, 100 years to wait for those trees to grow back to take that carbon out of the atmosphere. We need to do it right away.”

“If you're interested in reducing emissions now, then burning something that puts more carbon into the air than the thing you're replacing, which is coal, doesn't make sense.”

Help us oppose this short-sighted and ecologically damagin proposal by joining us to learn more and by signing the petition: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/reject-planning-permission-for-a-wood-burning-biomass-plant-in-splott-cardiff
