We’re doing get out the vote calls for local candidates in fast-growing and Democratic leaning Lehigh Valley, a ground-up strategy that helped end Republican dominance in other Pennsylvania counties and can pave the way for wins next year at the state, Congressional and Presidential level. Why spend your precious time on such down ballot races? Because Democratic insiders in Pennsylvania tell us: • Local officials set the location of voting places in 2020, the hours they will be open, and rules about canvassing and other activity – all critical to ensuring Republicans don’t suppress Democratic turnout next year. • Winning these races gives Democrats almost a year to show the benefits of Democratic government, and a platform to counter President Trump and his allies when they blitz the state next year. • Getting Democrats and progressives to vote now builds their involvement and makes them more likely to vote next year, and finally… • The Lehigh Valley Democratic Party tells us that calling, or texting has increased voter turnout from 11% to about 25-35% -- enough to flip these competitive races.
