"If we want to fight Fascism we must understand it. Wishful thinking will not help us"
-Erich Fromm, Escape from Freedom

Join the organisers at Our Global Moment for a reading group on the social psychology of Fascism. Understanding how and why people succumb to authoritarian impulses is crucial if we're to fight back against the rise of the right-wing globally.

We'll be using Erich Fromm's landmark book 'Escape from Freedom' to frame our discussion. Providing an overview of social psychology, a nuanced critique of Capitalism, and historical context for the emergence of 'the individual', this book is a key text in understanding the authoritarian personality.

This is a guided reading session: we'll provide historical and modern context, clarification on themes and concepts, and a modern-day application of the principles.

The required reading will be 1-2 hours per week. If you're interested but cannot commit to the reading, you are still welcome to join and discuss the main ideas with other progressive folks.

We begin on Saturday 1st May and finish on Saturday 19th June.
This group will meet for 8 consecutive weeks on Zoom.
We will meet from 2pm - 4pm Central European Time.

We'll send out a copy of the text to those that need it, a week before the first meeting.

This reading/discussion group is part of a series on progressive theory and strategy. The purpose of the group is to allow participants an opportunity to connect theory with experience, to become comfortable discussing complex ideas, and to be able to use critical theory to guide political action.

Our Global Moment is establishing a European network of progressive campaign bases rooted in power-building and internationalism, to fulfill a vision of global cooperation on inequality.
