JP Morgan Chase has funneled $196 billion into the fossil fuel industry in the last three years, in doing so, financing the climate crisis that is threatening our future. The UCSD administration hosts this bank on campus, effectively giving its seal of approval to this unethical corporation. We, the Green New Deal at UCSD, think this is unacceptable and we want Chase off our campus unless they divest from the fossil fuel industry.

This is a recurring action, the first of which occurred on Feb 13th, as part of a national day of action called Fossil Fuel Divestment Day (F2D2). Over 54 campuses participated in F2D2. Our action was
meant to foster a dialogue with the University of California, San Diego, regarding their relationship with JP Morgan Chase & Company, and other major banks that finance the extractivist fossil fuel capitalism that has pushed our planet to this current climate crisis. We asks that students, faculty, staff, and the university administration reconsider their banking choices. This includes investing in local credit unions and public banks. UCSD is a proclaimed leader in climate science; their banking choices should reflect that. In targeting the Chase bank in the Price Center, we aim to highlight their outsized role in financing the fossil fuel industry.
