The World Health Organisation has said that drug use should not be a crime. What do you think? Should all drug use be legal for personal consumption by adults? Should all drugs have legal regulated supply, with regulations depending on the drug’s impact and risk?

Last year 800 people like you completed Unharm’s drug use and policy survey. That included questions about legalising drug use, and about legalising drug markets.

In the first conversations the leadership team found that people are broadly on the same page about drug policy and fairness. But there are real points of difference around different drugs.

While 97% of people in our survey said they support legalisation of personal use of cannabis, it was 79% for hallucinogens such as LSD and magic mushrooms, 70% for MDMA, 53% for cocaine, 39% for heroin and 38% for methamphetamine.

It was a similar story for having legal regulated supply for different drugs, with 93% support for cannabis, 81% for hallucinogens, 74% for MDMA, 61% for cocaine, 52% for methamphetamine and 51% for heroin.

Given the harm caused by prohibition, stigmatisation and policing, especially for vulnerable individuals and disadvantaged communities, these February 2022 conversations will dive into these differences. By coming to share your views and hearing from other people in the community, you can help shape Unharm’s strategy in 2022.

If you have lived experience of drug use and/or the impact of drug use - in all its diversity - you are especially welcome.

This conversation is taking place online at 7 pm AEDT on Thursday, February 17.
