Community Science

Workshop #6

Monday November 14th

5pm-7pm

Workshop #6 in our series as part of the Mid-Atlantic Data Justice Collaborative, a partnership between the Central Atlantic Conference of the UCC, Interfaith Power and Light (DC.MD.NoVA) and the Center for Community Engagement, Environmental Justice, and Health (CEEJH) from the University of Maryland.

In this workshop we will define and discuss the importance of Community Science, how public
communities can take a role in the scientific data collection process and how these contributions can
create a positive impact within an air quality community science initiative.

Community science refers to work and research done revolving around environmental health by those of
the general public, not just environmental health workers, researchers, scientists, and such. Community
science allows for a larger range of contributions because participation is not as limited as other
traditional science fields. Community Science allows for a vast amount of data collection, and a way to intersect the general public into the scientific process. More data collection may equate to more studies published, more problems to be solved, and more hypotheses and theories to be tested.

Our shared environment is in crisis, and as people of faith we are called to tend to it, to nurse its wounds, and to care for the people suffering due to climate change and environmental racism.

We look forward to your participation.
