Critical Analysis for Movement Building: Antonio Gramsci and Conjunctural Analysis

Start: Wednesday, May 22, 2019 6:30 PM

End: Friday, May 24, 2019 9:30 PM

Conjunctural analysis is a powerful method to both understand and transform our present moment. This three-part seminar led by Dr. Jordan T. Camp and Rev. Claudia de la Cruz considers the role of conjunctural analysis in political and social movements. It will explore the development of this method by Marxist theorist Antonio Gramsci. Gramsci sought to analyze decisive conjunctures, or historical moments when previous separate forces merge to create political and economic transformation. While Gramsci penned his observations in a fascist prison in the 1920s and 1930s, his interventions continue to have direct relevance. The course will introduce participants with the skills to conduct their own conjunctural analysis of the present moment through readings and discussions. Throughout the course, we will consider how this form of analysis is being taken up in projects of popular education and political organizations to spark people’s imagination about possible futures, and to suggest that “it is upon this terrain that the forces of opposition organize.
