Elbe Hills Forest Walk
Start: Sunday, September 15, 2024•12:00 PM
End: Sunday, September 15, 2024• 4:00 PM
Join the Center for Responsible Forestry (CRF) and our friends as we hike through Dobbs Mountain Legacy Forest in Elbe Hills State Forest. We will be visiting Unit 2 of the “Dip In Dobbs” timber sale, a beautiful forest with residual old-growth trees that has never been logged before. We’ll see old-growth Douglas firs and western hemlocks on Nisqually ancestral land that is threatened by logging. On the hike we will learn what makes this forest unique and ecologically important, what species of plants and trees live in this forest, and what we can do to protect it. “Dip In Dobbs” is one of the last unlogged forests in the area and is slated to be auctioned off for logging in 2026 by the Department of Natural Resources unless the community takes steps to protect it!
Logistics: The hike is Sunday, September 15th. We will be meeting at the Plaza Market in Eatonville at noon, and then driving 20 minutes up the road to the trailhead. We will begin the hike by walking up a short and steep gravel road (approx. 1.5 miles and 500 ft elevation gain), then bushwhacking through the forest to see some of the largest trees, before walking back down the same gravel path. In total, the hike will be between 3-5 miles with around 800 feet of elevation gain. Dogs are welcome. Please bring water, snacks and/or lunch, and appropriate gear for the weather - we’ll go rain or shine.
What to Bring: Weather-appropriate clothing, hiking footwear, trekking poles (if desired), drinking water, food, discover pass.
Accessibility: Please be aware that this hike is off-trail and traverses terrain that may pose challenges to some individuals. The path is not paved and includes uneven surfaces and obstacles such as tree roots and logs. Participants should expect to encounter various natural features and may need to navigate through wet brush. Given the rugged nature of the terrain, we recommend that participants be in good physical condition and comfortable with hiking in potentially challenging conditions. Additionally, it is advisable to wear appropriate attire, including sturdy hiking footwear, long pants to prevent scratches, and waterproof boots to ensure comfort and safety throughout the hike. While we strive to create an inclusive and accessible experience for all participants, we recognize that individual needs may vary. If you have specific accessibility concerns or require accommodations to participate in the hike, please contact us in advance so that we may assist you to the best of our ability.
