Even before the pandemic, huge commercial rents were a top concern for small businesses. Now, with reduced revenues, they are even more of a burden - many previously successful businesses have tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.
Over 520K small business jobs were lost in the pandemic and over 240K small businesses in NYC may never reopen.. 48% of NYC’s small businesses are run by immigrants. When we lose small businesses, we lose culture. Over 26% of all jobs in New York City alone are at firms with 20 or fewer employees. Statewide, these microbusinesses provide over 957,000 jobs, with total payroll close to $43 billion. When we lose small businesses, we lose jobs.. Small businesses generate over $950 billion in annual sales tax revenue for the state. When we lose small businesses, we lose revenue.
